Abstract
A historical overview is presented of the (litho)stratigraphic studies into the Upper Cretaceous deposits in southern Limburg (the Netherlands), the type area of the Maastrichtian. From 1860 onward, a workable lithostratigraphy has been available for these deposits. At present, a division including four formations and 23 members is being used.
